Check this out: http://developer.apple.com/java/ I'm using osx 10.5.7 and I'm still on JRE 1.5.0.16 I have'nt checked on this since February but Apple has not included support for Java 1.6. Hope this helps.

About Me:
Information and Computer Science student at UH Manoa, graduating in Spring 2009, currently studying software engineering and concurrent programming. Working as a lab monitor at KCC's business education computer lab and volunteering at the Attorney General's computer crime lab. My primary interest is in computer security with a focus on digital forensics.
