Scenes from the last day of the FIRST in Hawaii Regional Robotics Competition. Students from schools across the state and the country gathered at the Stan Sheriff Center at the University of Hawaii to show off their math, science, and engineering skills in the form of ball playing robots. FIRST was founded by inventor and entrepreneur Dean Kamen, who was in Honolulu for the event.

On Thurs Oct 6, the King Kekaulike HS Robotics Club is having a fundraiser - showing the new documentary "Bots High".  The film follows 3 groups of high school students as the develop and compete BattleBots.  The KKHS Robotics Club competes in VEX and FIRST competitions. This year, as one of the mentors, I have started teaching arduino based robotics to those who are not involved in the competitions.

Our showing will be outdoors (weather permitting) utilizing Gabe Mott's ColorBox - a projection cube with interactive (kinect) features. Gabe will be demonstrating the box before and after the film.

Info on the event is at http://www.mauimakers.com/blog/botshigh/

On Oct 6 King Kekaulike HS Robotics Club is having a fundraiser - showing "Bots High" - a documentary on 3 high school teams that compete in Battle Bots. I'll be back with details.  See the trailer on the web site!

"Some kids play football in school. Other kids build bone-crushing combat robots with the expressed purpose of dismembering competing bots in thrilling caged-death matches. This film is about kids in the latter group.Camilla and Elizabeth load Famous Last Words

Camilla and Elizabeth load their robot Famous Last Words into the arena for battle

Bots High follows three teams of high school robotics geeks who build and battle their way to a national robotics competition in Miami. Our heroes include genius inventor Will, who constructs seemingly indestructible bots that unfortunately self-destruct (sometimes in a cloud of smoke and flames), and My Mechanical Romance, a team of Catholic school girls who stand out amid male bot participants with a combination of beauty, brains, and fashion sense."

FYI, the first 10 minutes of the Jim Hugunin Video includes a brief Robotics demonstration, using Microsoft's Robotics toolkit, IronPython, and (to keep the kids interested) an Xbox controller.
